Assessing Authority The designated authority is AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership). A positive assessment from AITSL is required before you can lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a skilled visa.

AITSL Requirements

To get a positive assessment, you must provide:

  1. Qualifications

    • At least 4 years of full-time higher education (university level).

    • This can be a Bachelor of Education OR

    • A degree in another field plus a postgraduate teaching qualification.

  2. Supervised Teaching Practice

    • Minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching in a school setting (not just childcare or training).

  3. English Proficiency

    • You must take IELTS Academic (or equivalent test).

    • Required scores:

      • Speaking & Listening: 8.0

      • Reading & Writing: 7.0

    • Results must be valid at the time of application.

  4. Documentation

    • Degree certificates & transcripts.

    • Evidence of supervised teaching practice (letters from university).

    • IELTS results.


💡 Key Tip

  • Without an AITSL positive assessment, teachers cannot apply for a Skilled Visa (189/190/491).

  • For Employer-Sponsored visas (482/186), some employers may still require an assessment, but the rules are less strict than for Skilled Migration.
